Office - Home Business

This client uses her office to run her home-based business, to manage her personal correspondence and finances, and to do computer work. She describes her primary organizing problem as one of needing to “get on top of the paper,” to “find a system that works.” She felt strongly that if we could help her de-clutter her office, her business would improve, and that would lead to overall improvement in her life. One of her goals is to be a successful business-person who can “stay on top of stuff once it’s organized.”

The Process
Before After

Our client had already painted the room a refreshing blue.  She wanted our help to develop a paper management system that she could maintain.

We recommended rearranging the room so that the desk faced the door instead of the window.  This created a work zone with the filing cabinet and office supply storage in easy reach from the desk chair.

The wire shelves along one wall hold some PartyLite inventory as well as misc. papers and other items.  Our client uses the tall filing cabinet for business files.  The computer in the corner belongs to her nephew.

The computer is moved out of the room, creating less visual clutter and more physical space for focus on business.  The wire shelves now hold business samples, file boxes for processing paperwork, and supplies for putting together hostess packets and preparing for shows.

Before, the desk was cluttered with paperwork because there was no paper processing system in place.

Now the desk is a clutter free and relaxing work space.  File boxes for “to read”, “to pay”, “to file”, etc., are located elsewhere so these papers don’t need to spend any time on the desk.  We also gave her a large in-basket where all mail and papers coming into the house go until she can sort them.

This is just some of the paperwork we helped sort and file!  We took everything out of the office and brought it to our client to sort.  She looked at each piece of paper and deciding whether to keep, recycle, or shred it.

We created a whole new file plan, discovering our client's categories as we went.  All her personal files fit into the drawer under the TV stand, and the tall filing cabinet is for business related files only.

Here is one of the things this client said when we were finished:

"At the end of the day I can tidy up and it's nice to come into in the morning.  And, I actually go in my office now in the evenings, just to watch TV, because it's such a nice space to be in!"
