Sewing Room/Office

This busy business owner wanted this room to be a sewing room first, and an office second.  When we started, she had office stuff all over the place and no place to sew.  With function as our first priority, we transformed her cluttered storage closet into an ergonomically healthy home office.  In the space we recovered, we created a sewing room with plenty of room to work and store materials.  We used the door to hang sewing projects in progress, and we even found room to display some wonderful collectibles that had been lost in clutter.

The Process
Before After
Sewing table, projects in progress, and a cupboard full of craft supplies left little open space to work.  Fabric stacked on a table made it difficult to move around the room.

We replaced the sewing table with a large, clean surface for cutting out projects. We  moved the craft supplies cupboard to another part of the room, and took down the curtains to let in more light.

We removed the office files, an old computer desk, and miscellaneous un-stored items  piled on this side of the room.

We moved the sewing machine and craft supplies cupboard into the newly empty space, and removed the doors from the craft supply cupboard to allow easier access.  Finally, we added a shelf above the sewing table for project and tool storage, task lighting, and photo display.

This bookcase held books, collectibles, and office supplies, and had become a convenient drop-spot for “stuff”.

We reorganized this bookcase to hold books by category, and moved the collectibles and trinkets to another location.

This closet stored fabric and projects in process.  A small folding table standing in front of the closet held more projects and papers.

We completely transformed this closet space into an ergonomic and bright little home office.

We added another bookcase for fabric storage on the same side of the room as the sewing machine, creating a zone for sewing and crafting.  Now all this lovely fabric is easily accessible and enjoyable.

The bookshelf is near the office area, creating an office zone for reading, filing, and conducting business.  We hung sewing projects in process on the back of the door.

Here is one of the things this client said when we were finished:

This used to be a room that I dreaded coming into. I love to sew, but there was never any space to work because my office stuff was everywhere. Now I love coming into this room because it’s really mine. I have room to sew, there is room on the floor for all four dogs, and I can even invite my bookkeeper into my office to work on my books with me. Finally being able to use this room has improved my whole life."
